Connecticut is right across Long Island Sound. There is no bridge over the Sound, so a moving truck has two choices. It can drive west through Queens and the Bronx, or it can ride a ferry across the water. Moving Service By Two Guys helps you pick the better one for your move.
We move you between Long Island and Connecticut. We do not do moves that start and end inside Connecticut.
Option 1: the drive around the Sound
Long Island parkways are closed to trucks and commercial vehicles. That includes the Northern State Parkway and the Southern State Parkway. So the truck takes the Long Island Expressway (I-495) west. Then it crosses the Throgs Neck Bridge (I-295) or the Bronx-Whitestone Bridge (I-678) into the Bronx and joins I-95 north into Connecticut.
On I-95, the truck stays off the Hutchinson River Parkway and the Merritt Parkway. Both ban trucks and commercial vehicles. This road route works well from Nassau County and western Suffolk, and for towns in Fairfield County like Greenwich, Stamford and Norwalk. Traffic near the bridges is the big risk, so we plan the start time around it.
Option 2: a ferry across the Sound
Two car ferries cross Long Island Sound, and they carry trucks:
- Port Jefferson to Bridgeport, in the middle of the Island.
- Orient Point to New London, from the North Fork.
For a move from the East End to eastern Connecticut, the ferry can cut many hours of driving. A move from Riverhead or Southold to New London, Groton or Old Saybrook is a good example. A ferry trip has a fixed sailing time and a fare for the truck. We book ahead and give the ferry line the size of the truck. We check the schedule, the space and the cost, and then tell you if the ferry beats the road for your move.
Packing a Long Island house
Many Long Island moves are full houses with a garage, a basement and a yard. Those take more time than an apartment. Tell us about the shed, the patio set and the boxes in the attic during the estimate. A good inventory keeps the truck size right and the day on time.
Your rights on a move between states
We are A & A Alliance Moving Inc, U.S. DOT No. 967970, MC-432549. We are FMCSA-authorized to carry household goods between states. Before the move, you get a written estimate and the FMCSA booklet "Your Rights and Responsibilities When You Move." On moving day, you get a bill of lading. That paper lists what we carry, where it goes and the delivery date. Our guide to long-distance rights from Long Island explains more.
Common questions
Is the ferry always faster than driving?
No. From Nassau County, the road is often just as quick. The ferry helps most from the East End to eastern Connecticut. We compare both for your dates.
Do you move people from Connecticut to Long Island?
Yes. We load in Connecticut and drive or ferry back to your new home in Nassau or Suffolk.
After I move, can you help me from one Connecticut home to another?
No. That move would stay in one state, and we do not hold the certificate for it. We only take moves where one end is on Long Island or elsewhere in New York or New Jersey.
