Moving to Long Island With a Dog or Cat: Licenses, Rabies Shots and Moving Day

Updated October 11, 2026

A family business since 1999, licensed and insured

Updated October 11, 2026

Pets feel a move as much as people do. In New York there are also two rules to keep in mind: rabies shots for dogs, cats and ferrets, and a license for every dog from your new town or city.

Rabies shots are the law

The New York State Department of Health says state law requires rabies vaccinations for all cats, dogs and domesticated ferrets. The first shot must be given no later than four months after the pet is born (three months in New York City). The second shot is due within one year after the first, and after that boosters are due every year or every three years, depending on the vaccine. Your vet gives you a certificate; keep a copy with you during the move. Note for moves into the City: the fact sheet says ferrets are illegal in New York City.

License your dog with your new town

Under New York’s Agriculture and Markets Law, the owner of a dog that reaches four months of age must apply for a dog license right away, with the clerk of the town, city or county where the dog lives, and must show a statement from a veterinarian that the dog has been vaccinated against rabies. After a move, that means applying where you live now. The Town of Hempstead, for example, notes that its dog license rules are set by New York State.

Before moving day

Book a vet visit if a shot is due soon, and ask for copies of records. Update the address and phone on the pet’s tag and microchip. Pack a pet bag with food, water, bowls, medicine, leash, litter and a favorite toy.

On moving day

Pets should ride with you, never in the moving truck. While the crew is working, keep pets in a closed room or a crate with a sign on the door, so no one leaves it open by accident. At the new home, set up their space first, before you start unpacking.
