Nassau County is a patchwork of local governments. Knowing who runs your street helps you plan parking, permits and building rules before moving day.
Towns, cities and villages
Nassau County has 2 cities, 3 towns and 64 incorporated villages, plus more than 100 unincorporated areas. The three towns are Hempstead, North Hempstead and Oyster Bay. Incorporated villages run their own local government; unincorporated areas fall under their town. Garden City, for example, is a village in the Town of Hempstead, and Great Neck is in the Town of North Hempstead.
Why it matters for a move
If you need to reserve curb space, park a truck on a narrow street or ask about a building rule, the right office is your village or your town, not the county. Call them a week or two ahead if parking near your home is tight. For condos and co-ops, the managing agent sets move hours, deposits and the COI.
Hempstead and Garden City
Many moves here are houses with driveways, which makes loading easy, but houses also mean basements, garages and attics. Empty those early. For garden apartments and co-ops, ask the managing agent about move hours and which entrance the crew should use.
Great Neck
Great Neck has many co-op and condo buildings as well as houses. Buildings commonly ask for a reserved elevator and a certificate of insurance. Ask for the sample COI a week before; we send the COI your building asks for.
Getting the truck there
Moving trucks cannot use the Meadowbrook, Northern State or Southern State Parkways, which New York State closes to commercial vehicles. Trucks use the Long Island Expressway and other truck-legal roads.
