The end of October is a busy time to move, on Long Island and in the city. Leases turn over, the weather is still good, and a few big events change traffic. If you are moving between Long Island and New York City at the end of the month, here are five things to know before you pick the day.

October 31 is a Saturday this year. Month-end weekends fill up first, so book now or pick a weekday. A weekday move can also be easier with building elevators and the curb.

The Village Halloween Parade goes up Sixth Avenue from Canal Street to 15th Street at 7 PM on October 31. If your move ends in Manhattan, expect closed streets nearby and finish early.

The NYC Marathon runs through all five boroughs on Sunday, November 1. Many streets close, so plan around it if any part of your move is in the city that day. For the drive itself, our guide to Long Island parkways and moving trucks explains which roads trucks can use.

Clocks go back on November 1 and it gets dark before 5 PM. Start your move in the morning so the carry and the setup happen in daylight.

Sweep the stoop and the walkway before the crew comes, and put a mat at each door. Wet leaves on steps are a real risk when the crew is carrying heavy pieces.

Moves between Long Island and the city run on expressways, not parkways, so allow time for traffic and tell us your preferred start time. We plan the route and the crew around it.
