Moving From Long Island to New Jersey: Routes and Rules

Updated October 10, 2026

A move from Long Island to New Jersey crosses New York City and a state line. The route, the crossing and the paperwork all matter.

Getting off Long Island

Moving trucks cannot use the New York State parkways, and NYC DOT also closes the Belt, Cross Island and most of the Grand Central Parkway to commercial vehicles. Trucks use the Long Island Expressway and other truck-legal roads toward the City.

Crossing to New Jersey

The two main options are through Staten Island, crossing the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge (an MTA crossing) and then a Port Authority crossing to New Jersey, or north across the George Washington Bridge (Port Authority). The Port Authority publishes a truckers guide with its rules for trucks at its bridges and tunnels. The best choice depends on where in New Jersey you are going and the time of day.

Licences for an interstate move

A move from New York to New Jersey is interstate, so the mover needs a federal license. Ours is U.S. DOT No. 967970, MC-432549, and we also hold NJPM 000930 in New Jersey and NYSDOT 34875 in New York. Federal rules on estimates and the 110 percent limit apply.

After you arrive

New Jersey gives new residents 60 days to transfer their driver license and registration, according to the NJ MVC. Update your address with the post office, your bank and your insurance.

Plan the day

Bridge and expressway traffic is the main variable. An early start helps. Tell us about the building rules at both ends: elevator reservations, move hours and COI.
